Brent Loken - Innovative Educator and Change Agent

'If we value independence, if we are disturbed by the growing conformity of knowledge, of values, of attitudes, which our present system induces, then we may wish to set up conditions of learning which make for uniqueness, for self-direction, and for self-initiated learning.' Carl Rogers

Transforming Education around the world

I would like to begin building a series of model schools around the planet that have the potential to impact education as we know it by serving as powerful examples of 21st century education. These innovative schools would be connected both philosophically and digitally. Each school would have an environmental focus and be constructed as carbon neutral as possible. The curriculum of each school would emphasize social responsibility and much of the learning would take place through social initiatives in the community. For example, students could help construct new housing for those who need it, develop green initiatives or volunteer to work with AID’s patients.  Students would learn through real world experiences and communities would benefit from having young people who give back to their community and country. Students will travel between schools to participate and learn about the social initiatives started in other countries and with other cultures. Through their digital connection, students could work on projects and brainstorm ideas with students around the planet. I believe that with current technologies and Web 2.0, for the first time in history it is possible to bring affordable education to everyone. I also believe that technology has the power to connect individuals and build relationships like no other time before.
